20 - Data Structures and Storage

Mary Jane arrived at work at Marv’s Comics to find that the CEO had decided it was time for the company to be the next great thing in comic books. It has a large archive of comics and would like to create a database that allows customers to customize comic books on the Web. The thought is to have graphical images of portions of its comic books and to allow customers to select from a set of characters and plots to create a variety of storylines. It also wants to animate these comic books and has already begun to create streaming video comic books. Mary Jane needs to figure out the best way to physically store these data and what storage device would best suit the company’s needs. She knows that there will be surges of traffic to the Web site and there may be people trying to compromise the database. She also recognizes that these are comic books, not medical files. Furthermore, the database will be growing rapidly but she does not anticipate the data will change much once it is entered.

Select a data structure and storage device for this situation and discuss why it is the best decision.
