Chapter 1
Skill Builders

Many people have multiple information appliances, such as a PDA, MP3 player, mobile phone, laptop computer, and desktop computer. A common data management problem for individuals is a lack of synchronization of files across these many devices. Visit the Web sites for SyncML and Apple's iSync. Forecast what developments will emerge in individual data management in the next few years.

We are likely to see most information appliances participate in synchronization of personal data. Thus, you add a person to your mobile phone's address book and when you next do a synch, the person's details are added to the address book on your PDA, laptop, desktop, music play (e.g., iPod), and other information appliances you own. Initially, you might have to initiate the synchronization, but eventually it should become invisible.
